County Museum Director – Värmlands Museum

Värmlands Museum is one of Sweden's most visited county museums and a central cultural institution in the region. Through exhibitions, collections, programs, and knowledge dissemination, the museum tells the story of Värmland's history, present, and future. The museum includes public spaces, a restaurant, and branches throughout the county, and conducts extensive cultural heritage work in collaboration with municipalities, associations, and other community actors.

With a strong commitment to preservation, education, and cultural experiences, Värmlands Museum is an important meeting place for residents, schools, visitors, and the cultural sector – playing an active role in strengthening Värmland's identity and attractiveness.

The Assignment

As County Museum Director, you will have overall responsibility for operations, organization, and staff. The museum consists of approximately 30 employees and six managers who currently bear significant operational responsibilities in their areas. You will lead efforts to create structure, workplace tranquility, and sustainable leadership – becoming an important ambassador for Värmlands Museum in the region and in dialogue with founders and other stakeholders.

Your responsibilities include:

  • ensuring quality and sustainability in the work with collections and preservation centers.
  • developing the museum's public activities and relevance throughout Värmland.
  • strategically managing finances and future funding.
  • building good relationships with the region, municipalities, the museum sector, and other key actors.
  • strengthening the work environment, division of responsibilities, and collaboration within the organization.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are looking for a clear, trust-based, and present leader – someone who creates security, participation, and structure. You are experienced in leading complex organizations and thrive in a role that includes culture, operational development, and financial responsibility.

We believe you have:

  • experience in leadership with personnel and budget responsibility.
  • a good understanding of public funding and politically governed operations.
  • relevant academic background in the museum or cultural heritage field.
  • the ability to build trust, collaborate, and communicate clearly.

Meritorious experiences include a background in museums or cultural heritage, change management, or work with collections, inclusion, and digital development.

We Offer

An opportunity to lead one of the country's most engaging and appreciated county museums – with an important mission in Värmland and an operation that means a lot to many. Here you will contribute to both development and sustainability, together with competent and dedicated employees.
